How to Optimize Your Google Business Profile in British Columbia (Step-by-Step)
Your Google Business Profile is often the first thing customers see. Here is how to set it up properly if you operate in Surrey, Vancouver, or anywhere in BC.
When someone searches for your business on Google, your Google Business Profile is often the first thing they see — hours, reviews, photos, phone number, and a link to your website. For BC service businesses especially, this profile can generate more calls than your homepage.
Yet most profiles we audit are incomplete, outdated, or missing easy wins. Here is a step-by-step guide to fixing yours.
Step 1: Claim and verify your profile
If you have not already, go to Google Business Profile and claim your listing. Verification usually happens by postcard, phone, or email depending on your business type.
Only verified owners can fully manage a profile. If someone else claimed your business incorrectly, use Google’s ownership dispute process.
Step 2: Choose the right primary category
Your primary category is the single most important classification signal. Choose the category that best describes your core service — not the broadest one available.
Examples:
- A web design agency → “Website designer” not just “Marketing agency”
- A dental clinic → “Dentist” not “Health consultant”
- A restaurant → specific cuisine type when available
Add relevant secondary categories after your primary is set. Google’s category guidelines explain how categories affect visibility.
Step 3: Write a clear business description
You have 750 characters. Use them to explain what you do, who you help, and where you operate. Mention Surrey, Vancouver, or your specific service areas naturally — do not keyword-stuff.
Good example: “WebNauts helps small and mid-sized businesses in Surrey and the Fraser Valley build modern websites, improve Google rankings, and grow through digital marketing. Services include web design, SEO, e-commerce, and custom software.”
Step 4: Add accurate hours, phone, and website
Wrong hours frustrate customers and hurt trust. Update holiday hours in advance. Use a local phone number customers can actually reach — for WebNauts that is 778-7230-WEB (932).
Link to your main website, not a social media page. Your website should load fast on mobile and clearly match the information on your profile.
Step 5: Upload real photos regularly
Profiles with photos receive more engagement. Google reports that businesses with photos see significantly more direction requests and website clicks — see their local marketing research for context on how visual content drives local actions.
Upload:
- Logo and cover photo
- Team photos
- Completed project or product shots
- Your office or storefront if applicable
Avoid stock photos when possible. Authentic images build trust.
Step 6: Post updates weekly or bi-weekly
Google Business Profile posts appear directly in search results. Share offers, new services, blog articles, event announcements, or seasonal tips. Each post can include a button linking to your website or contact page.
This takes ten minutes and keeps your profile active — an easy signal of a living, operating business.
Step 7: Build a review generation system
Reviews influence both rankings and click-through rates. After a successful project or sale, ask customers directly:
“If you were happy with our service, would you mind leaving a quick Google review? It helps other local businesses find us.”
Respond to every review within a few days. Thank positive reviewers by name. Address negative reviews professionally and offer to resolve issues offline.
Step 8: Configure service areas correctly
If you travel to customers — plumbers, cleaners, consultants — set service areas instead of showing your home address publicly. List the cities and regions you actually serve: Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford, etc.
Do not list areas you are not willing to serve. Misleading service areas violate Google’s guidelines and can result in profile suspension.
Step 9: Connect with Search Console and Analytics
Link your profile insights with Google Search Console and Google Analytics on your website. This helps you understand which searches drive calls, form submissions, and direction requests.
Step 10: Audit quarterly
Set a calendar reminder every three months to review:
- Category accuracy
- Photo freshness
- Review count and responses
- Hours and contact info
- Q&A section for unanswered questions
